Joey Zhou

Joey Zhou is an aspiring pianist who has gone on to build a career in technology as a technical program manager.  He grew up in Dallas, TX, where he studied with Ms. Yang Jiang and later with Mr. Yifan Liu. Under their guidance, he won multiple piano concerto competitions at the levels of international and national, and was invited to perform with the SMU/Meadows Symphony Orchestra, Plano Symphony Orchestra, Marshall Symphony Orchestra and Irving Symphony Orchestra.  He also won as a soloist in the prestigious competitions such as the Eastman International Young Artist Piano Competition in Rochester NY,  Isabel Scionti Piano Solo Competition at Kingsville, TX and the Lee Biannual Piano Competition at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.

 

Joey earned a B.S and M.Eng in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, where he also studied piano under Mr. David Deveau.  He organized and performed annual solo piano recitals at MIT, where he played pieces such as the Toccata and Fugue in C major by Bach-Busoni, Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise by Frederic Chopin, Norma transcription by Franz Liszt, and Blue Danube waltz transcription by Adolf Schulz-Evler.

 

After graduating college, Joey started his professional career as an IT consultant at Exeter Group in Boston.  He then transitioned into a technical program manager at Burning Glass Technologies, worked as a product manager at PayPal and Samsung, and back to program manager at Microsoft for their Azure cloud.  He currently works as technical program manager at ByteDance.

 

Joey lives in San Jose, CA with his wife Christine and son Adam.  Besides piano, he enjoys hiking and playing various sports.

Gorden Cheng

Studied at the Studio 1996-2003 

Gorden Cheng is a multifaceted individual who has excelled both as a classical concert pianist and an information security architect. Residing in San Diego, California, he has garnered top prizes in numerous amateur piano competitions across major cities like Paris, Warsaw, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, and Colorado Springs. His piano prowess has been shaped by private lessons with esteemed mentors including Yifan Liu, Dr. Robert Xavier Rodriguez, Rinna Livshin, Katherin Dvoskin, and Vitali Margulis.

 

Mr. Cheng holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Dallas and an MBA from Western Governors University. His professional credentials are extensive, including certifications such as CISSP, ISSAP, CSSLP, CCSP, CISM, CISA, and CRISC. In recognition of his dual achievements in his career and music, Mr. Cheng was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from UT Dallas in 2023.

 

In his professional capacity, Cheng serves as the Deputy Corporate Security Architect for Oracle Corporation. His role involves overseeing information assurance on products and services with a focus on security architecture and design for hybrid cloud solutions. He is also responsible for risk management across Oracle's various business lines and acquisitions. Additionally, Cheng chairs the cryptography governance board, setting corporate-wide standards for the use of transport layer security, public key infrastructure, and cryptographic protocols and functions.

 

Beyond his professional and musical pursuits, Cheng enjoys a variety of hobbies. He plays concerts in his spare time, engages in hardware and software hacking, enjoys drinking boba with his wife Judy, and plays Counter-Strike and Starcraft with his two sons, Alex and Jamie.
